During the 2020 Covid19 restrictions I thought it would be a productive use of downtime to work on some music with my good friend Chris Dakin during a year when we couldn't do much else. I had a handful of song ideas, bits of lyrics and some tunes and that developed into deciding to do an album together. Having Chris involved in every stage of the process has been a new and hugely uplifting experience for me, as I normally work completely in isolation. Out of this came 10 songs which for me are the soundtrack to a year of challenge, confusion, reflection and change.
Songs about the fragility of mental health (Black Dog), letting go of situations and people (I'll Leave it Alone & Let It Go), reflections on the journey we're all on, (Late Night Buses) what and who really matters in life (Ones You Love & Record On), and also how much you want to travel and see the world when a pandemic has other ideas (One Of These Days & Wheels).
Among these new songs is "The River Runs Dry", a song inspired by and dedicated to our good friends (and neighbours in our little village), Brian and Moraig Minns, as they have been on a challenging and scary cancer journey on top of the Covid restrictions for much of the last year. Had he been well enough, Brian's guitar playing would have featured on this album. Next time, mon ami!
All of these songs partly chronicle the journey during the last year. I'm ever grateful for music as an outlet and friends to share it with. I'm also grateful for the support, encouragement and input I've been given during this project.
Thanks to Chris for the months of work he's put in on Bass, his friendship and support.
Grateful thanks also to Neville Bonner for contributing tenor sax on "If I Made The Rules".
And to Hannah (the Cleaning Lady) for her input again on backing vocals (Wheels), mixing, sound, production and her legendary patience.
